We are thrilled to announce an exciting event as part of this year’s History Book Festival. Join us on Sunday, September 29, at 2:30 PM at the Cape Henlopen High School Theatre for the festival's closing event featuring the distinguished author Tiya Miles. She will be discussing her latest book, "Night Flyer: Harriet Tubman and the Faith Dreams of a Free People" (Penguin Press, 2024).
Harriet Tubman is vividly brought to life in "Night Flyer." Tiya Miles delves into the historical and ecological context of Tubman’s life, portraying her as more than just an American legend. Through Miles' insightful narrative, readers will explore Tubman's world, her kinship with other enslaved women, and her profound spiritual journey. This book is a testament to Tubman’s enduring legacy and offers a powerful message for contemporary audiences.
Tiya Miles is the Michael Garvey Professor of History at Harvard University and the author of five award-winning works on slavery and race relations in early America. Her previous book, "All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, A Black Family Keepsake," was a New York Times bestseller and won the 2021 National Book Award for nonfiction. A recipient of a 2011 MacArthur Fellowship, Miles' contributions to historical scholarship are widely celebrated.
The event will feature a conversation between Tiya Miles and our very own Linda D. Harris, the director of programs and events at the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center. Linda will open the program with a presentation of Underground Railroad "code songs," accompanied by her husband, the talented guitarist and vocalist David B. Cole.
Linda D. Harris's extensive work at the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center has enriched countless visitors' understanding of Tubman's legacy.
